Alana is a thirty year old engineering consultant living close to the sea in a Brighton sea-side low-rise period house with her partner and within an easy commute from London. Most of her work is done from home and 2 to 3 times a year she travels to London for work meetings. Depending on the purpose of her travel Alana walks, cycles or uses her electric car for longer distances. Alana lives in an equitable community that promotes and celebrates cultural diversity. Within the community they share tasks like tending the roof garden and working at the community food coop. Most of the food Alana eats is 100% organic and grown within her community. She travels either to visit her family or for adventurous sports like climbing, diving and swimming. Once, her work took her to Antarctica to supervise the construction of a research station studying how to protect polar ice caps. Alana prefers security and stability over material wealth and she practices yoga and Qigong and her next goal is to run a marathon. She now aspires to lead a more sustainable life.

Alana has made significant changes to her life in recent years. She now lives in a co-operative community, although still in Brighton, based around self-sufficiency and farming. She has surrendered her car, now travelling on foot or bike. Both Alana and her partner are keen to start a family; a more realistic prospect now as Alana can work from home most of the time. Technology still plays a major role in her worklife, as well as for social communication and community-based activities, and organising her talks on sustainable living in this increasingly ecological age.
