Character Profile

Nix

Name:
Nix
Age:
32
Occupation:
Guitar Teacher, Semi-Professional Cyclist, and Freelance Sustainability Consultant
Where do they live (geographic coordinates or location)?
Inner East suburb of Melbourne, Australia

Why did they choose to live where they live?
Close to:

the city,

key cycle training routes,

public transport and key public transport nodes,

major centres of activity, shops, leisure and good coffee shops

Close to friends and family
What kind of dwelling do they occupy?
Two bedroom unit in a three storey dwelling with green roof and micro-agriculture for growing own vegetables.

The unit has multiple functions - as well as living and leisure. Nix uses the space for teaching guitar and carrying out freelance consultancy work. She can connect into her clients databases and workspaces through the ubiquitous, virtually free telecommunications connectivity.
With whom do they live?
They live with their partner and one child.
How do they get to work?
They work at home a lot of the time, or wherever they feel like it as a freelance. They can work at their client's preferred location or from home. Working from home is preferrable to enable Nix to care for her child.

As a guitar teacher, she's working from home.

When working as a professional cyclist she's out on the roads, promoting the brands of her sponsors by winning races and getting captured on still and moving image media.

Having more than one offical occupation enables a degree of flexibility in how she approaches where and when she wants to work.
How do they get around their community in general?
Generally they get about by bicycle or public transport systems, but for moving around a lot of stuff or as a family the preferred mode of transport is a low-emission, electric private vehicle (fuelled by energy generated from hte building in which the family live). This is particularly important for travelling with her elderly and infirm parents-in-law who are not able to walk any more.
How do they relate to the people in their community?
They are very close to their immediate neighbours as they all assist in maintaining the green roof, green walls and vegetable gardens.

They meet their close friends who live in the same or nearby suburbs at their favourite coffee shops - a key hub of social activity.
Who do they interact with most?
They interact most with their neighbours, close friends in the same or nearby suburbs, guitar pupils, other cyclists and clients.
Do they travel?
They do travel as they have family living in Europe and the US.

So, they travel to see family, but they also travel to see and experience different cultures and ways of living. They also travel to enjoy the wonders of the rest of Victoria and Australia.

It's easy to become insular and wrapped up in ones own little world. Exploring helps see things in a different perspective. Nix believes this is an important part of the education of her child.

Where have they commonly traveled?
Europe, US, South East Asia, South America
What is the furthest distance they have travelled? Where?
See above.
What is the one place they would like to visit and why?
They would very much like to visit every continent on Earth, to experience the diversity of life and human culture.
What is their attitude toward food?
They generally love it!

Home grown is best, largelly vegetarian, but as a cyclist cannot get all protein needs from legumes, so eggs, chicken and kangaroo is also added to the diet.
What is their favourite meal? What is something they have never eaten but would like to try?
Their favourite meal is bbq kangaroo - a very sustainably produced meat in Australia and high in protein and iron and low in fat.

They have never tried beef as the industry collapsed due to the unsustainable nature in which it was produced 50-odd years ago.

They have also never tried more than three varieties of apple. Again, around 30-odd years ago producers were so intensively producing and selecting just a couple of varieties of apple that others became uneconomical to produce and the genetic diversity of the apple varieties fell by the wayside, inspite of the efforts of a number of "rare breeds" producers.
What is the highest level of education they pursued/completed?
They have completed a masters degree in a couple of fields of specialism.

How much do they earn monthly?
It fluctuates depending on the level of work month to month, but typically $6000 pcm.
What was their most expensive purchase?
Their most expensive purchase was their unit in which they live.
How do they relate to material wealth?
Material wealth is useful in helping to achieve a relatively comfortable lifestyle (in Western terms), but money is not the be all and end all. How you live your life is more important.
What is their global footprint? To what do you attribute the largest part of their footprint? (ie travel, purchases, food)
Their footprint is probably around 1 to 1.5 Earths.

The largest part of the footprint would be their international travelling.
What are their hobbies and interests?
Cycling

Playing music and giving recitals

Hanging out with friends and drinking coffee

Learning about the built and natural world around them through a variety of media

Book reading
What is their favourite colour?
Purple
Who is their favourite music band?
The Beatles

Nearly 100 years old, but classic.
What was the last book they read?
Wuthering Heights
What is their attitude toward technology and why?
Technology needs to be continually developing to become more energy efficient, particularly with regard to electrical goods.

Why? Energy comes at a very high cost unless you produce it yourself, as part of the infrastructure of your building or the precinct in which you live.
What technology could they not live without?
The bicycle

Simple, yet effective.
What are their key values?
Live life and enjoy it. Working, money and all associated trappings are not what life is about.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Waste not, want not.
How would you describe their upbringing? How have things changed?
Their upbringing was in a family with mother, father and one brother.

Things have changed in that her and her partner are not married as her parents were. They have only one child. Things have not changed in that Nix choses to be at home with her child when they are at home from school during the week or during school holidays. She believes that parents should be parents and spending time with their children.
What are their personal strengths and weaknesses?
Ability to reuse and recycle most things coming into the home. Very little is wasted.

Weakness - a desire to eat meat!
What is their next big life event?
Taking a big 3 month trip with the family touring around South America. She'd really like to check out some of the guitar styles of South America first hand to inform and influence her playing and teaching.
What do they care about?
Creating a good home and upbringing for her child

Family

Friends

Her local environment

The wider world and state of the environment

What six words would describe their personality or character traits?
Loyal

Humourous

Determined

Goal-driven

Hard working

What do they believe in and why?
They believe in being healthy, happy and enjoying your life with your family and friends, without detriment to others or the world in which we live. At the end of the day those are the things that really matter.
