2020

Sophie

Which of the four worlds do you believe that your character will be living in?
Selfish Bubble
Why?
Society's growing cynicism towards environmental action and concerns has led to a disillusioned population. With rising travel costs, there is a growing reliance of technology and social networking to supplant human activity and interaction. People are more connected over greater distances, rendering physical location less important.

This has resulted in reclusive, narcissistic individuals who have less concern with the physical environment than virtual space where most spend their lives.
What has been the most significant event in their life over the past 10 years?
Finally being able to conceive after years of trying. Decided to have a child as a single parent, since marriage as an institution has been outmoded.
What is most different for the character in 2020 compared the way they lived in 2010?
Having to consider a dependent. And also, not being able to travel as frequently abroad due to higher costs. This has only meant an increase in travel over shorter distances via cars and buses rather than air travel.
What has remained the same?
A strong relationship with technology which has evolved into a reliance. Recently had neurochip installed which has made managing a household much more convenient and hands free especially having to look after a child.
What is their lifestyle now?
Still same as in the 30s. Relies heavily on hired nanny to look after infant. The ability to work virtually from home has also made a working single parent a viable possibility. Many peers in similar life structures means a support network of similar individuals.

Night time creches are available for such professional to continue night life, whilst social networking allows one to maintain circle of friends. Whereas in the pass, family units supplanted friendships.
Where is your character living now?
Russia. With high speed train networks, Sophie can still satisfy her love for travel without having to fly. Russia's highly developed network allows Sophie access to Europe as well as Asia which has kept her busy.
With whom are they living?
She lives with another male friend also with child. Together they co-habit as well as support each other in raising their offspring.
What is their occupation now?
Sophie is now a marketing consultant for various firms across Europe who have entered the Asian market. Her cultural exposure and familiarity with both ends of the continent has help her create a lucrative business.
How to they get there?
Her love for travel has given her the opportunity to master many languages. Especially with the help of the neurochip implant, which has allowed her to advance her linguistic capabilities. Now that the outdoors is someone of a novel experience, it has become a very safe-guarded industry which Sophie eventually gave up hope of exploiting as a business venture.
How does your character get around in general?
She commutes by trains.
Do they travel?
Yes, every week.
What is the furthest distance they have travelled?
Langkawi.
What is the one place they would like to visit?
Australia.
What is their favourite meal?
Roast peiking duck.
What is something they have never eaten but would like to try?
Sashimi. However, due to strict regulations fish has become a very rare and expensive food item.
What do they purchase on a regular basis and where?
Neurochip upgrades and applications on the internet.
What was their most expensive purchase?
Their Neurochip implant.
What technology could they not live without? Has this changed over time?
Neurochip implant. It has progressed from handheld supercomputers.
What was the last book/website they read/perused?
She recently downloaded a book on The Rise of the ASEAN Economy.
How does the character socially interact now?
Mostly through the internet and occasionally at bars if her social network happens to be geographically in one place. however as this is rare, she spends most of her social interactions in virtual bars, sites or with her cohabiter.
How do they relax?
Occasionally they tune out and head for a totally 'Cut-Off' retreat where all signals are barred and the mind is trained to un-use their Neurochip. This is the latest development in therapy.
What is their next big life event?
Sending their child to school. Deciding which network to sign up the child to.
What do they care most about now?
What is the newest network to join?
What is a headline from their local paper now?
Viral Pandemic for Implant Users
In a paragraph describe a typical day in the life for your character from the moment they wake up until they go to bed.
Sophie wakes up when she automatically goes online at 7am. She checks up on her child, while viewing the morning news. Getting ready for work.

She establishes video conference links with her workplace at 8am where she enters her virtual office. She works with clients during this period. Making international calls and getting in touch with her employees. She may 'prod' an employee online if they are late for work. This is possible with the Neurochip implant.

At 11am, her schedule gym session is on. She enters her treadmill and begins a virtual run with an important client. Over this session, they discuss business.

At lunch time, she goes offline from work to tend to her baby. The nanny has feed and changed the child. Sophie must soon decide which school to send her daughter too. She has yet to sign up for diagnostic tests. She is going to wait for her cohabitor to decide together.

The rest of the afternoon is administering paperwork. At 7pm she shuts down and resumes leisure status. She decides to download a movie before being interrupted by a social call. Some friends are in London and she is going to meet them in person. This is exciting and she decides to order a new dress online for On-hour delivery. She then instructs the nanny departing the house.

The meeting point is a new and expensive water bar. Given the scarcity of water, natural spring water has become a huge luxury. As most water is desalinated or recycled. New water is rare and highly sought after. Alcohol is no longer the social lubricant.

The night ends at 12 midnight as everyone must prepare for online tomorrow. She returns home to find her cohabitor at home. They agree to sleep together for the evening before both retire to their rooms to rest.
