Why?
Although there has been a social shift in recent years, and awareness of climate/environmental isues is as widespread as it has ever been, recent economic developments have shown that the 'West' prioritises economics over ecology.
While lip service is paid to environmental concerns, the underlying causes of climate change and overall ecological disaster are not dealt with by enough of the population to make a difference.
The rise to prominance of India, China and some South American nations has caused Europe and America to 'up its game' in terms of competitive business; that means cutting corners and increasing cosumption.
An ever-increasing global population (in particular, the growing middle class) drives this selfishness and as long as people do 'just enough' to feel that they're being responsible, they will overlook the impending disaster.

The vague sense of guilt that he once felt as part of the industrialized western world, when contemplating its impact on the planet, has now metastasized into fully-realized clinical depression.
Insomnia and anxiety, resulting from his depression, have crippled his ability to function as he once did in society although he goes through the motions anyway.
In an attempt to be 'sustainable' his place of work encourages working from home from its employees; he takes full advantage of this.

Average, western, yuppie, liberal. More time indoors than out, due to aur quality problems.

It doesn't matter!
What is something they have never eaten but would like to try?
Again, it doesn't really matter. These two questions are perhaps appropriate for some characters in some cultures, but for your average westerner it matters about as much as their favourite colour.
What do they purchase on a regular basis and where?
Almost all major purchases are made online through interactive shopping software. Unfortunately, the hardware to support it had to be purchased in a store...

What technology could they not live without? Has this changed over time?
Again, technology being the all-pervasive element that it is, any loss of technology would be a pain but not life-threatening. Their internet connection has become more and more of a necessity though, as they work, shop and communicate extensively online.
What was the last book/website they read/perused?
The last book they read has not been written yet, I don't know what it's going to be called. They probably recently perused news websites to find out how the escalating tensions in the middle east are getting on.
How does the character socially interact now?
Mostly through virtual environments online.
How do they relax?
They still have a (very old) dog that he walks to relax.
What is their next big life event?
The big 4-0.
What do they care most about now?
Their health. Food quality is now so poor that most people are reliant on nutritional suppliments to provide their daily needs.

In a paragraph describe a typical day in the life for your character from the moment they wake up until they go to bed.
They wake up, shower and dress at around 10am. Out of habit, they eat a rudimentary breakfast, but compliment it with several nutrient/vitamin suppliments. After walking/feeding the dog, they sit down at their desk to work. Work continues, intermittently for the next 9 hours or so. They spend a significant portion of this time surfing the internet; keeping up-to-date on the latest news from the Middle East, chatting and buying things. When he finally logs-off he cooks a meal, walks the dog and then settles back down to spend some leisure time on the internet until he's too tired to continue and goes to bed.
