Why?
Despite incessant efforts by Dr Bruce and his professional colleagues to work towards more sustainable future, the almighty dollar came up trumps as the world lies in the balance. It is known however that climate change is happening, but a global consensus that this is due to carbon emissions hasn’t been achieved. Oil, gas, coal and parallel industries have been successful in propegating doubt about climate change science.
The rise and rise of Asia has continued. Global climate change mitigation schemes have failed to date, due to failures by the western world in brokering deals which did not inhibit growth of developing world. This has been largely due to the lack of recognition that to these nations and their people, this growth a means rise from poverty and third world living into the modern world.
Dr Bruce workload however, has increased in the past 10 years because the building industry can now demonstrate through successful case studies that green buildings are in fact cost effective and benefits building owners’ pockets. The building industry is getting greener, despite skepticism over climate change. Similarly the renewable energy sector has made large inroads into utility electricity production as cost competitiveness in construction and operation improve significantly. It’s all a matter of money in the selfish bubble world!

What has been the most significant event in their life over the past 10 years?
In 2020 Dr Bruce is now 38 years old. One of the most significant event in his life over the past 10 years was the full completion of the first Carbon Neutral city in the World, in Abu Dhabi. Despite various attempts of shelving the project after the two big economic crisis of 2008 and 2016. He is overwhelmed because this is actually happening. It’s like a dream coming true. Maybe cities around the world will start following this model towards a sustainable future. He’s looking forward to see what is going to happen in the next 10 years.
This event was trumped however by personal event. Dr Bruce did find that girlfriend. And now has a young daughter aged 3 in 2020.

What is most different for the character in 2020 compared the way they lived in 2010?
Technology is abundant and cheaper.
Australia is now more than ever considering itself a modern multicultural Asian nation as it strives to define its unique image. He misses home a little as he adjusts to the European lifestyle.

War over land, oil and now water
What is their lifestyle now?
Still laid back, but adapted to the British lifestyle (he has moved to England temporarily- see below). He’s usually confined to the space of his own house as there is not much space available outside and property has become extremely expensive. He is always in search for a bit of surf, though.
Where is your character living now?
He has moved to England, where he has found a mild climate. Australia has become hotter. Not good for young kids, who were suffering with the heat waves in summer.
With whom are they living?
His wife and three year old daughter
What is their occupation now?
The same, but now he’s an associate of his company.
How to they get there?

How does your character get around in general?
On his motorcycle sometimes, but mostly by public transport
Do they travel?
He hasn’t been able to travel that much. Some of the places he visited 10 years ago are now under the water. He mostly travels to France and Spain with wife and kids and to surf a little bit. It takes him less than one hour to be in France due to the new underwater train system
What is the furthest distance they have travelled?
He took a space flight with a commercial carrier as a 35 birthday present from his family. This he thought was truely awesome!!
What is the one place they would like to visit?
The Underwater remainings of the Maldives
What is their favourite meal?
Meat is still available, however much more expensive. He still enjoys a BBQ
What is something they have never eaten but would like to try?
He has eaten the most unimaginable things for the past 10 years
What do they purchase on a regular basis and where?
Re-useble bags. No supermarket has plastic bags anymore and he always forgets to bring the re-usables to the supermarket. Luckely the new generation bags are great mulch on the garden.
What was their most expensive purchase?
Upgrading his house to be more energy efficiency, environmentally friendly and off-grid (from energy and water).
What technology could they not live without? Has this changed over time?
Internet. It is now a part of every household appliance. From fridges, to microwave, TV and others. They’re all connected to each other and you can access anything remotely. The fridge, for example, identify what’s missing and makes an online order to the local supermarket with items they need to buy for that week.
What was the last book/website they read/perused?
Al Gore’s best seller “I inconveniently told you so!”
How does the character socially interact now?
He oftern works from home with the family, communicaty and conferencing over virtual meeting spaces.

another child. Not sure he is up to it. But it'll be a ride.
What do they care most about now?
Alleviating overty in the third world as the gap between rich and poor grows ever greater. Influencing policy, planning and design toward a more sustainable, happy future for his children.
